Farm Trips

Our gleaning program offers free, pick-your-own trips to local area farms for communities that have limited access to fresh produce.
Gleaning typically happens in the summer and early fall towards the end of a crop's harvest. Instead of ploughing under unharvested fruit or vegetables, farmers will make their fields available free of charge to participants. Commonly gleaned crops include strawberries, raspberries, peas, beans, corn, and apples.
North York Harvest coordinates gleaning trips together with its community partners. In 2009, about 200 people participated in this initiative.
The farms that participate in our gleaning program also provide weekly donations of fresh produce which are distributed through our agency network. In 2009, over 25,000 lbs of produce from local area farms were distributed during the growing season.
