Truck Driver
The North York Harvest Food Bank is the primary food bank for northern Toronto. An independent, charitable organization, it distributes over one million pounds of food to 60 community programs between Hwy 27, Steeles Ave, Victoria Park Ave, and St. Clair Ave/Eglinton Ave.
Position Summary:
The Truck Driver drives one of the Food Bank’s trucks to pick up or drop off food and works with colleagues and volunteers to move the food on and off trucks. The driver will also assist in the planning and implementation of operational projects. This position may be especially busy during major holiday periods.
Reporting Relationship:
The Truck Driver reports to the Senior Manager, Operations and Finance.
Key Accountabilities:
- Drive a daily scheduled route (usually within the GTA)
- Load or unload or help to load or unload product
- Assist with the record keeping and weighing of the food product
- Do a daily inspection of the truck to make sure that all systems are in order
- Establish an ongoing rapport with contacts when picking up or delivering to agencies, companies, food drive locations etc. Act as an ambassador for the Food Bank
- Assist the Operations Department in special projects as assigned
- Other duties as required.
Qualifications:
- 1 -2 years experience driving a straight truck (min 18 foot box) in an urban setting (i.e. city streets and loading docks)
- 25 years of age or over.
- G license required for automatic transmission (no air brakes)
- A clean abstract is preferred
- Good understanding of the city is required
- A basic understanding of circle check inspections and top-ups (and driver’s log).
- Able to lift 35 pounds at a time as the deliveries are usually unloaded by hand
- Able to operate within a team as the driver is usually accompanied by 1-2 assistants
- Must be comfortable meeting Food Bank contacts. (This may include store managers, corporate donors, and members of the public).
- Knowledge of issues regarding hunger and poverty ideal
Hours, Length of Contract and Compensation:
21 hours per week at $14/hour
