Putting the Community into Food Banks

Toronto, PHOTO OP- North York Harvest, Northview Heights Secondary School, and the Bathurst-Finch Network are excited to announce the launch of the Bathurst-Finch Community Food Bank. Join us on Saturday December 3rd for the grand opening!

The Bathurst-Finch initiative is the product of a year and a half of collaboration, and countless neighbourhood meetings. North York Harvest built on existing community partnerships from the very beginning: the Toronto District School Board provided the space. Local non-profits are working together to create a network of support for clients. And an advisory council of community stakeholders will help make decisions about food bank programming.

“Opening this new food bank is an important addition to the Bathurst-Finch community.” says Anette Chawla, Executive Director of North York Harvest, “There are many new immigrants living in the area, as well as a high number of seniors scraping by on fixed incomes and struggling with health concerns. We will be providing an invaluable and long-awaited service.”

The Bathurst-Finch Community Food Bank is funded by the Ontario Trillium Foundation in partnership with Unison Health & Community Services, FoodShare Toronto, and Circle of Care. Located at Northview Heights Secondary School, the food bank will be open three days a week, with evening and weekend hours geared to client needs.

North York Harvest is northern Toronto’s largest food bank, distributing more than 1.6 million pounds of food through sixty neighbourhood programs. An independent, charitable organization, we envision a community where all members are able to meet their food needs.
